Books, art and ... at a crossroads!
And not only in the USA, but worldwide.
In Alberta, Canada, for example, a list of around two hundred books
was compiled, that were to be removed from libraries.
Among them are authors such as Margaret Atwood:
Her book ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ and nine other works can
be seen in the exhibition
under the motto ‘blacked - banned - burned’ on 8 November in Mainz.
The complete list of books on display can be found below the photo.
A personal note
Umberto Eco, a respected writer and journalist, winner of the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Mainz,
formulated fourteen characteristics that define fascism in his essay ‘Eternal Fascism’ (1995).
One of them is: `Culture becomes suspect when it is identified with critical attitudes.’
We are not on the sidelines, but in the thick of things.
Once again, groups are being declared guilty,
culture is being cut back, art is being banned.
Nationalism and egoism are on the rise.
Anyone who looks can see it.
Or: One glance is enough – the picture is already familiar.
